‘Scuffle’ leads to shooting; victim flees Richland Avenue motel
The Aiken Department of Public Safety is following several leads in a Tuesday night shooting at a Richland Avenue motel from which the shooting victim apparently fled.
The shooting happened at 10:10 p.m. near a stairwell in the upstairs breezeway of the Knights Inn on Richland Avenue, according to Capt. David Turno, who said it appears one person was shot.
“We believe only one person, but we do not know because they fled the scene,” he said.
At press time on Wednesday, no arrests had been made.
According to Turno, two armed men came to the motel to rob a man, who had called them and asked them to meet him there. The man told officers there was a “scuffle” between the three of them, and that one of the armed men was shot, Turno said.
The victim of the attempted robbery had a minor head injury after being struck by one of the robbers with a pistol, Turno said.
Investigators are trying to determine the identities of the two men and why the victim called them there.
Police are looking for a gray Mitsubishi convertible with a black vinyl top they believe the men were driving, Turno said.
Investigators were working the scene throughout the night, and are attempting to review surveillance footage from the motel.
