To Fall weather — The forecasters may say these wonderful cooler days won’t last, but we plan to enjoy every one of them.
To the Aiken Department of Public Safety — The loss of two officers in the past year has brought out a resolve by City leaders to take the community back. Part of that process began last week when officers and community members met to begin working together to reduce crime.
To all the candidates who will participate in the Aiken Standard’s political forum — The forum is Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aiken Municipal Center and will be televised live on ASTV channel 95. The event is open to the public and it will be a great time to meet the candidates in person and hear what they have to say. In this crazy election year, with write-in and petition candidates in most races, this forum will help make sense of the confusion and help you make the best decisions.
To the new Carolina Bay deck — The new observation deck at the Carolina Bay near the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, was officially opened last week. The new observation deck can be used by area schools and is ideal for science classes. Teachers were already bringing students to the bay and now there is a safe, accessible area for them to conduct class. The Carolina Bay is home to a variety of plants, birds, reptiles and insects.
To the fair — The Western Carolina State Fair opens this week. We look forward to the rides, the shows, the animals and those decadent funnel cakes.
To holding off on the voter ID law until 2013 — How you feel about a federal court ruling last week that upheld a South Carolina law requiring voters to show photo identification depends on your politics. But the decision to hold off enforcement for a year is good. This election season has been plagued with so many problems with more than 250 potential candidates being kicked off the ballot for ridiculous administrative reasons. Now we won’t have one more controversy in the mix.
To a pantsless robber — A man robbed a North Augusta bar on Tuesday wearing no pants, a pair of boxers on his head and using a silver bamboo stick disguised as a gun before fleeing in the victim’s car. Thank goodness he was wearing a T-shirt. How bizarre is that? The victim is OK, but the robber is still at-large. If you see a man with no pants and boxers on his head, please call 911.
To a badly planned getaway — Earlier this year we gave a Thumbs Down to a thief who used a lawn mower pulling a trailer as a getaway vehicle. Last week, the man arrested for ill-planned burglary was sentenced to eight years in prison, suspended upon the completion of three days in jail, five years probation and 100 hours of community service. Even the judge was dismayed over the odd getaway method.
To another South Carolina political scandal — We aren’t passing judgment on concerns about the S.C. Speaker of House Bobby Harrell’s campaign spending. Those facts aren’t in yet. Right or wrong or somewhere in-between, it’s just another symptom of a broken political system in South Carolina that needs to be fixed now.
