WHITE KNOLL 28, AIKEN 27, 2OT

Besieged by a lack of offense and elusive 140-pound White Knoll quarterback Quin Jones, Aiken High came to life late in the fourth quarter before losing 28-27 in double overtime.

The failed comeback dampened an otherwise exciting Homecoming – attended by scores of alumni, some of them playing with the band and dozens more resuming careers as cheerleaders for the first half.

The Hornets decided to go for the win in the second overtime after quarterback Nakeem Spann dove for the pylon from 3 yards out for his third TD, bringing the team to within one point. For the first time all game, Spann lined up under center. But the play never materialized, as the Hornets were flagged for illegal procedure.

Troy Bengue, who had previously kicked three extra points, returned to the game to attempt to send the game into a third OT. But the snap was high and, with Timberwolves defenders bearing down, holder Will Heggs ran to his left to try and make a play but was tackled well behind the line.

Head Coach Carey Johnson missed the game because of a family emergency. Assistant Coach Reid Wightman said the staff had a play for the 2-point conversion that had worked for them in the past.

“We got off the deck tonight,” Wightman said. “Our kids battled their hearts out, and that's all we can ask them to do.”

The Hornets are now 2-5 overall and 0-1 in Region 5-AAAA and will travel to Dutch Fork next week for another conference game. White Knoll is now 6-1 for the season and 1-0 in conference play.

The difference-maker was Jones, listed at 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds. As Wightman said, the Hornets just couldn't stop him, as Jones rushed for 199 yards on 27 carries. Mostly he got into a shotgun formation in an empty backfield and burst out unseen behind a large offensive line.

The Hornets trailed 14-7 about halfway through the fourth quarter, as the Timberwolves were set to run out the clock. Delvin Riley was playing quarterback for White Knoll and lost a fumble that Aiken recovered at the Timberwolves 30.

That brought the Aiken High crowd to life, and the Hornets took advantage. The big play was his fourth-down run that gave the Hornets a first down inside the Timberwolves 10. D'Andre Pope later went the final 3 yards for the touchdown. Bengue tied the game at 14-all with the extra point.

Aiken got the ball first in OT and on third down, again it was Spann who made a nifty run along the right sideline to put the Hornets ahead. But White Knoll needed just one play to pull even, when Diondre Hibaugh drove straight through middle. The Wolves took the lead for good in the second overtime when Zack Weed scored from 2 yards out on only his second carry of the game.

White Knoll dominated the first half, scoring with 1:45 left in the opening quarter on Jones' four-yard run. The Hornets got a huge break in the second quarter when the White Knoll punter couldn't handle a poor snap. He finally fell on the ball on his own two-yard line, and Spann bulled over from a yard out. The Timberwolves then scored shortly before the half for the 14-7 lead.
