The National Nuclear Security Administration has a new field office manager at the Savannah River Site.
Michael Mikolanis started in his new role Monday.
The National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA, is responsible for the production and maintenance of materials used in nuclear weapons.
At the Savannah River Site, the NNSA is responsible for the production of tritium and the construction and eventual operation of the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility where the NNSA plans to make plutonium pits. Beginning Oct. 1, the NNSA will be the site manager of the Savannah River Site.
The field office manager leads the NNSA team at the site.
Mikolanis takes over for Jason Armstrong who left for a job at the Pantex plant.
Mikolanis previously served as manager of the Los Alamos Field Office of the Office of Environmental Management. He also served as an assistant manager for nuclear material stabilization at the Savannah River Site and as a departmental representative issue lead in the office of the undersecretary of energy.
Before the Department of Energy, Mikolanis worked at Bechtel Power Corporation and served in the Navy.
Mikolanis is a licensed professional engineer with degrees from Purdue and Georgia Tech.
