South Boundary Avenue Closed (copy)

South Boundary Avenue between Whiskey Road and York Street was closed March 7 due to a sinkhole. It has now reopened with a new traffic pattern.

A downtown Aiken street that was closed March 7 has reopened but now has a new traffic pattern.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation reopened South Boundary Avenue between Whiskey Road and York Street Saturday.

The traffic pattern on westbound South Boundary Avenue changed.

Specifically, the two-lane road has a right-turn only lane and a left-turn and straight ahead lane. Prior to the closure of the road, through traffic and right-turn traffic used the same lane and the other lane was reserved for left-turning traffic.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation closed South Boundary Avenue between Whiskey Road and York Street March 7 due to a sinkhole.

A heavy piece of equipment sank and fell into a hole between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. March 7 and had to be removed by crane, Aiken City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh said March 8.

The cause of the sinkhole has not been provided.

However, S.C. Sen. Tom Young Jr. said the cause was not a pipe failure.

An department of transportation contractor used flowable fill — concrete — to fill the hole.

But, cold weather Wednesday and Thursday night and rain Friday delayed the curing of the concrete and the installation of new asphalt.
