A man who killed a teenager in an August 2021 shooting will spend 40 years in prison.

Larry Bernard Mackie, 36, of Graniteville was sentenced to 40 years on April 2 by Second Judicial Circuit Courtney Clyburn Pope, according to Second Judicial Circuit Deputy Solicitor Ashley Hammack.

Mackie pleaded guilty to murder, two counts of attempted murder, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Mackie's sentence stems from an August 2021 shooting that killed a 14-year-old Nathaniel Tyler Johnson at a residence on Saddlebrook Trail in Graniteville, the Aiken Standard previously reported.

"After the the states presentation and the defense, the judge accepted his plea and sentenced him to 40 years," Hammack said.

Johnson was found dead with at least one gunshot wound and a second victim, identified at Mackie's father, suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds to the arms and leg during the incident.

Prior to the shooting, Mackie had been  involved in a shooting at a Family Dollar in Wrens, Georgia, where he fired multiple shots at the store clerk, "striking them at least once," the paper reported.

Police said robbery was a motive for the store shooting and both shootings were connected.

On Aug. 17, 2021, Mackie was charged with five counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, after trying to take the service weapons from two officers while actively fighting law enforcement

Hammack said Mackie’s trial was scheduled to begin April 15, but was moved up. She said Mackie is not eligible for parole.

After his sentence, Mackie was taken into custody by the South Department of Corrections.
