University of South Carolina Aiken theater students will perform in downtown Aiken as part of the University Theatre Program Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, and Friday, Jan. 26,. Performances will be at 139 Newberry St. S.W. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the event is free and open to the public.
“The community will see our students perform scenes, monologues and songs they have prepared for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's Region IV Conference,” said Paul Crook, executive director of the Etherredge Center and External Programs at USCA. “Other performances will include improv games performed with audience participation by our student Improv Troupe.”
Crook added sound design, properties design and stage management students will also display their portfolios. The event allows students to showcase their work and get real-time feedback from faculty before entering their work at the festival.
Every year, plays produced by the USCA Theatre Department are entered into KCACTF and are judged by faculty and theatre professionals from other universities. This year’s KCACTF Region IV Festival will be in Albany, Georgia, on Feb. 6-10. Actors selected for recognition can compete for the Irene Ryan Scholarship and get the opportunity to have their work critiqued by theatre experts throughout the region. Scholarships range from $500-$1,000. Students who finish at the top of their categories at the Regional Festival can be selected to present their work at the National Festival in Washington, D.C.
