Mossy Creek Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Week by inviting Aiken County Public School District personnel, pastors and community members to read books to its students. On Tuesday morning, current ACPSD Superintendent, King Laurence visited the school to read from several books.

Read Across America Week is an annual literacy celebration in March in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Each year, this week is used as a time to promote childhood literacy in a way that makes reading fun

Mary Jones, literacy coach at Mossy Creek, said the students have been “very excited” to welcome each guest reader.

“We just really [want to] encourage our students to love reading and… to read as much as they can,” said Jones. She added that these guests “show how much they love reading so that our kids love reading too.”

Laurence read to students in 3K, fourth and fifth grades from two books he brought along: “Walk the Dog” by Bob Barner, and “Dirt on Their Skirts” by Doreen Rappaport and Lyndall Callan.

“Any time I’m invited to read to classes… I love it,” said Laurence. “I have a huge collection of children’s books… one of my very favorite things is to read to children… I love getting in and sitting on the floor or sitting with groups of students and reading to them… I just enjoy doing it, it gets me closer to the reason we do what we do, which is the children.”
