TalkBacks for June 30 6/29/2009 11:27 PM Blue laws
I've been reading the Aiken Standard and I see that the blue law subject has taken over the news again. You know forcing people to go to church on Sunday sounds very much like the Inquisition and that didn't work out too well. So they should leave people a little freedom with choices. That's what this country is all about.
If a person doesn't want to shop in South Carolina in the mornings, that's their privilege, but I should have the right to shop on Sunday morning if I feel like it.
Suspending blue laws won't generate revenue. No one wastes gas to drive to Augusta to buy things they can wait until 1:30 to purchase. The manufacturing plants will also have to stop paying double time on Sundays because it is only paid because of the blue laws.
Fireworks
Think of all the wasted time, effort, man hours, money and aggravation that the police must go through every single holiday with this fireworks thing, responding to calls of people shooting fireworks that are in illegal places. Wouldn't it be better if we just had a legal Fourth of July fireworks show in a public place where everyone could go and enjoy it? It's so important, and this is so ridiculous that we don't have it. Let's figure out how do get it done for this Fourth of July.
Oil vs. gas prices
Will somebody explain to me why oil prices go up half a dollar, and gas goes up seven to 10 cents a gallon, but when oil goes down $2 a barrel, gas goes down a penny a gallon.
Gay Pride Day
This is a TalkBack against the Savannah River Site. Y'all won't print it, but right as you go into Aiken barricade, there is a big sign Come Celebrate National Gay Pride Day with Us. Is the Savannah River Site taking taxpayers' money and paying for a gay pride celebration? Gives you a serious case of road rage to go in the barricade to work and this sign glaring you in the face. I challenge you to take a picture of this and put it in the a paper and run a survey and ask the employees that have helped to build this country's security and defense system about it being a slap in their face. Challenge you, Aiken Standard. We'll see if you print it.

Gay Pride Day at the SRS allows for participants to attend a gathering on site (B-Area) for about an hour and a half, with outside speakers making presentations (there is a taxpayer cost associated with badging and escorting visitors on site). National Day of Prayer rules at the SRS require participants to limit observations to 30 minutes (during the employees' lunch periods) with no outside speakers allowed. The GLOBE organization has a website on the SRS government computer network. National Day of Prayer does not. I think it only fair and equitable to provide the same courtesy for the National Day of Prayer, or impose the same rules on Gay Pride Day observance, or any other group observance for that matter.

Comment Title: Gays
Keep sending protest comments about Gay Pride Day. That way people won't forget that Aiken is very backward and lacks educated thinkers.

Why should people care if people are gay. You don't have to answer for their actions.

Comment Title: Fireworks
The only problem I have with fireworks, is the fire risk. It's so dry here. What will you people do if you should catch a house on fire or a grass fire that could get out of control? All I can say is please be careful!

Comment Title: Gay pride
Funny how when SRS celebrates African American History, Asian history, Pacific Islander history, Hispanic history, Veterans day and all the other "Diversity Celebrations," no one really cares... But mention the word 'gay' and it elicits tremendous amounts of hateful words to be displayed on a public forum.

How exactly is gay pride week at SRS contrary to national defense or the mission of the Savannah River Site? I see absolutely no logic or intelligent reasoning in that statement.

Comment Title: Re:Fireworks
I am tired of hearing about fireworks. If you do not like the restrictions then either fire your mayor and city council memebers or move into the county! The arguement for moving into the county is the less government in your life the less restrictions you will have!!! If you live in the county you can also cut down Crepe Myrtles without receiving a fine!!!!

Comment Title: Hunh? SRS so useless
SRS has helped with our nation's security?! That's a joke. It's just a money pit for those with their hands in it & a huge mess which threatens us all. SRS produces no useful good or service. Fighting for human rights on all levels is a higher calling. PS I'm not gay.
