S.C. agency fires employee over records disposal
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina health agency has fired an employee after officials say the worker admitted throwing protected medical records into a public recycling bin rather than taking them to be shredded.
Health and Environmental Department Commissioner Earl Hunter said in a news release Thursday that the documents were found Feb. 20 at a city of Columbia recycling center near the agency's main office.
The agency retrieved the documents a few days later and contacted the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate.
SLED officials said in a news release that investigators determined the employee did not disseminate the information for criminal purposes and no criminal charges will be filed.
The health agency did not identify the employee who was fired on March 15.
