S.C. couple killed when car hits tree near Greer




GREER -- South Carolina state troopers say a couple has died after their car hit a tree about a mile from their home.

Troopers say the man and woman were in a speeding 1997 Saturn that ran off the ride side of the road an hit a tree Saturday night.


Spartanburg County Coroner's Investigator Ken Toney says 60-year-old John Godfrey was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene, while 52-year-old Carolyn Pemberton died about an hour after the wreck at a hospital.

Troopers say the crash happened on a rural road, about a mile from the couple's home in Greer.
