Pair of Aiken horses running at Saratoga
The field for Saturday's $500,000 Grade 2 11âÑ8-mile Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will feature two horses that were trained over the Aiken Training Track.
Dogwood Stable's Aikenite, who won his last time out at Belmont Park on June 19, will have jockey David Cohen in the irons again. The Florida-bred son of Grade 1 winner Yes It's True will break from post position No. 4 and is being held at 10-1 in the morning line. Aikenite has career earnings of $332,606.
"He's going great," said Cot Campbell, Dogwood Stable president. "I saw him gallop this morning, and he looked wonderful. He worked several days ago, and he showed enthusiasm. He's as sharp as you would want him to be. David Cohen is steamed up about the opportunity (to ride)."
"He's coming off a good race," said Campbell. "Our Plan A is to run him in the Jim Dandy, and, if he runs well, he'll be pointed toward the Travers. If he doesn't want to go a mile and an-eighth, we'll point him toward the seven-furlong King's Bishop."
Spring Hill Farm's homebred A Little Warm will start from post position five and is being held at 7-2 in the morning line. Ron Stevens broke the son of Stormin Fever in Aiken.
He won a 11âÑ16-mile allowance race at Delaware Park his last time out on June 29 after a 93-day layoff. The Anthony Dutrow charge won the Spectacular Bid in his 2010 debut. He was second in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and has yet to finish out of the money. He'll be ridden by John Velazquez.
"He's very good, and I'm very happy with the way he's going forward for sure," said Dutrow.
Dogwood Stable's Lou Brissie is being pointed toward the 11âÑ16-mile With Anticipation Stakes on the turf in September and then will be pointed toward the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in October, said Campbell.
