The Aiken Garden Club Council met on Nov. 4 at the Doll House. President Jackie Langner called the meeting to order. Langner said that all but two of the garden clubs did not approve the various clubs acting as hostesses for the Doll House on Saturdays and Sundays.

The clubs felt they would not be able to find members willing to participate. There will be further discussion on this matter.

Former AGCC President Pam Kolb presented information about a "garden party" held in Camden to encourage people to help with documentation of the historic gardens. She would like to follow this example and have a "garden party" for volunteers who are willing to help with the gardens in Aiken.

She is asking for one member from each club who would be willing to help with this. She thinks it would be about five hours per month. The project would be expected to last about two years.

Blue Star Marker Committee Chairwoman Peggy Bumpus reported that the Ridge Spring monument was found on the exit at Highway 20 and SR 19. She thinks that a decision needs to be finalized about whether the monument needs to be moved. Peggy will continue to pursue this.

Langner presented a request from Brian Sanders asking for help to maintain the landscaping around the County Courthouse, especially in light of Aiken's 175th birthday. Clare Turner will contact him for more information.

A representative of the Aiken Camellia Society, Jim Dickson, spoke to the Council and asked that the garden clubs support the Society. He said that the Society meets six times a year at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month from October to March. The group meets at St. John's United Methodist Church in Ward Hall.

The Society is especially in need of help for its 60th Camellia Show on Jan. 15.

Council received an invitation from the North Augusta Council to attend an educational meeting presented by Judith Dill, the Historic Landscape Initiative chairman. The meeting was Nov. 9.

The Garden Council of South Carolina has sent out a message asking gardeners to consider giving any extra plants to the South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson.

There is a three-page list of plants that are suitable on the website. For more information, contact Todd Steadman at tsteadm@clemson.edu.

Kolb presented the possibility of a field trip to Plant Delights in North Carolina. It is a place to find and buy unusual plants and to see interesting gardens.

The trip is tentatively set for September 2010. The cost would be around $45 per person and take about 2 ¬½ hours each way. If anyone is interested in this possibility, contact Kolb.

If anyone donates money or objects to the Garden Club Council, he can get the Council tax number and write it off on his itemized taxes. If he is not itemizing, this will not work.

The Aiken Garden Club Council Flower Show will be held on May 7 and 8. After this reminder, Langner adjourned the meeting.
