Police warn of holiday break-ins
The City of Aiken's crime prevention officer spent 10 minutes wandering through a Southside retailer's parking lot earlier this month and found six cars that he said would tempt a criminal looking to make a quick steal.
Sgt. Aaron Dowdy found a wad of cash sitting in the front seat of one car, a purse on the dashboard of another, a notebook full of compact discs and a handful of other valuables sitting out.
"It was unbelievable," he commented.
Police are warning residents again this year that car break-ins will increase as the holiday season approaches.
Thieves often begin their shopping by stealing from your vehicle as you head into malls and shopping centers.
"This is break-in season," Dowdy said. "If you don't want it stolen, take it with you, lock it in the trunk or store it out of sight."
Combine that with locking your doors, and you stand a better chance of deterring a criminal from targeting your car.
Take an extra minute to think about what could be stolen from your car, Dowdy added.
Police are also reminding residents to look out for their personal safety, as well as their personal property.
Park in well-lit areas after dark, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
"That's always a good rule," Dowdy said. "But be especially alert when you are banking or at an ATM."
Public Safety is increasing patrols this season and will be in both marked and unmarked vehicles.
"We will be in vehicles that people would never suspect we are watching from, but we will be paying close attention," he added.
While the officers are in the parking lots, they will be cracking down on parking violations, as well.
"If you are parked in a handicap spot that you have no right parking in, expect a ticket," he said.
Hydrants and fire lane laws will also be strictly enforced.
"The biggest problem we see is illegal parking in handicap areas," Dowdy added.
"Park there and you are taking a huge risk."
A ticket for parking illegally in a handicap spot is $100.
"Spend that money on your gifts and let someone who needs that spot have it," Dowdy said.
