Comment Title: Volunteer Fire Chiefs get unfair Rep
Just and fyi... The days of the red neck fire chief are already over. Did you not see the paper or TV after the recent Tornado? Silver Bluff has an African American Fire Chief, a Professional Engineer as an Assistant Chief. I know first hand that these guys are true professionals, as well as the other chiefs throughout Aiken County. Jackson, and Wagner's chiefs are both on SRS Fire Department, New Ellenton's Chief is works for major construction company, Bath Chief is a Lt. for Richmond County Fire Department, and the list goes on and on... This county is so fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers. It's just a shame that there hard work is over shawdowed by this mess!!

Sheriff Mike Hunt has divided loyalties between serving all citizens in the unincorporated area of Aiken County as their elected sheriff and at the same time providing fire protection to the citizens of Clearwater. However, for the Clearwater citizens he's getting into their pocket book at least two times: (1) with property taxes (2) with fire fees.

You can't do both, what would happen if an event occured where he needed to wear both hats? For example a WMD attack in the Clearwater area. The unified Incident Command system was created just for these type occasions. One person can't without tunnel vision on one incident or the other effectively mitigate or control this situation. Example; the two tornados' the past two years it took both the Fire Dept and Sheriffs' department working together not as only one person and the Graniteville incident. No matter what anyone says both Chief Napier and Sheriff Hunt did a great job, however, they could not have accomplished what they did without each other.

Some of you people are just plain idiots. There is nothing illegal about Sheriff Hunt holding the job of sheriff and chief of a VOLUNTEER fire dept. It's not a dual office..Read the law.
There are tons of folks running law enforcement and fire depts at the same time. You people ever hear of "Public Safety" departments??? Does the term "Aiken or North Augusta Public Safety" ring any bells for you?? They are police and fire, just like the rest of this county should be. It's time we got rid of all the redneck fire chiefs and put the county wide fire service under one roof... I personally think Hunt would do you a good job.

Ya'll were quick to do the story when it broke or was it a favor to the Sheriff? Yes Toole has been cleared!!!!!! All these comments on abuse of power and no investigation? WOW. If a regular deputy had had 1/4 of these comments put on him the Sheriff would have fired him. Yes there is a turkey shoot going on in Clearwater. The Clearwater Fire Dept had never been anything from begining until now, and it will never be anything but a joke. This dept needs to be combined with Bath. Hunt has done a great job as sheriff, however he has no business getting himself involved with an single fire dept. When there is a control issue and it comes between a part time Fire Chief of any district in Aiken County I would select the sheriff over any one of them. All of these Fire Chiefs are the ones wanting power, that is why they can not come together for the good of the people. It is all about themselfs "CHIEF". Look at who they are,,,, there backgrounds tell the story.
This thing with Hunt is bigger than anyone knows,,, he has an agenda that is not known by the public and there is some other motive for getting involved with Clearwater FD. Look below the surface for the real motive. I would vote for hunt again even though I think he has made a very serious mistake getting involved with Clearwater Fire Dept.

Good evening everbody. As a former acso deputy I can tell you all this office is nothing like it was when I started working there back in 1977. Back in the day we were the ones keeping the county safe by locking up the dangerous ones, not everyone, just the ones that needed it. There's a lot of things yall will never know about us that went on behind closed doors. You don't need to know. The same is the case in modern times. Mike is a good man. Just don't pi?? him off. Ok. Everyone needs to mind their own business and not worry about the interior politics of office. If the man wants to put out fires when he's not playin cowboys and indians that is his deal. They need to condemn thos fleabag motels over there in clearwater and use them as training facilities for the fire dept. You liberal yahoos would flip if you saw the inner workings of the acso. It makes the jersey mafia look like petty thugs. That's exactly why you don't want to get involved. Don't test Hunt or you'll end up like the others!

It seems to me that the other 20 or so volunteer fire departments throughout Aiken County are disadvantaged by having a countywide sheriff focus his attention and resources on the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department. How does he expect these other areas to feel about his bias and preference toward Clearwater and possible use of county resources they had a hand in paying for with taxes in the direction of this lone volunteer fire department. It just doesn't seem appropriate.

Why doesn't someone ask the SO where Clearwater gets their burn buildings from. They currently have several homes that were seized by ACSO being used for training there. Why are other departments not given the seized properties in their areas?I guess cause they also don't have the opportunity to have Hunt's county issued vehicles on scene either. I have seen photos taken by members on CFD that include County police cars and sheriff Hunt's truck complete with county issued BLUE lights (aren't fire dept lights red?) on scenes of training burns. Its absolutely asinine to think that sheriff office funds are not being used by Hunts newly illegally acquired fire dept.

Actually it would be good to see him take over all county wide fire depts as the Sole Chief. He has the experience and knowledge to do it. People wise up , S.L.E.D won't investigate Hunt, they will just cover for him. I know from 1st hand experience that if you stand up to Hunt he will use the power of his office to bring you down. If you kiss up to him you will get anything you want. Someone needs to get wise and find the former Chief of Clearwater and find out what happened when he stood up to Hunt.Folks dont waste ya time calling SLED it won't do a bit of good. Hunt has spent the last several weeks either riding around Clearwater or being at the station. Hunt Sammy Turner and Butch Jordan have kept tight tabs on who comes and goes in Clearwater.Hunt was seen checking out the vehicle of 1 of the canidates for Chief while he was being interviewed. Butch Jordan works for SCE&G.You can find a SCE&G truck at Clearwater Fire Dept most anytime of the day. I see our money for power is going to someone not doing their job. The people of Clearwater need to demand the current Commissioners resign. Marvin Herndon didnt sit in on any of the interviews for Chief. Terry Overstreet told people that Hunt would not be considered because he asked him several times to come interview and he didnt. The Monday after the last interview all 3 Commissioners were at the Fire Dept interviewing Hunt at Herndons request.Seems Herdon is the Hunt of Clearwater.Someone get a roster from CFD and look at the deputies Hunt has on the Dept that live way way out of the Clearwater area.Why was it a week or so ago during a storm at night that Clearwater had a call to Clearwater Elementry School? Sammy Turner signed on the radio as did several others from Clearwater but Bath Fire Dept beat Clearwater to the school.Clearwater's station is less than 1/2 a mile from the school and Turner lives around the block from the station.Yes Hunt can stop the 1st responder calls in Clearwater, better yet he can stop any type of calls that go out he controls the 911 Center and has done so in the past.Someone needs to pull the fire call tape from the Ashley Motel a month ago and listen to Hunt on the radio as Car-1 and then going to the Fire station to get a truck and the call wasn't even Clearwaters.People wise up and stand up.

Sheriff Mike Hunt has taken over and now directly controls the Civil Process Division after getting SLED to arrest several of the hard working women in that organization over petty charges. After which he was able to talk County Council into cutting their contract short and turning complete control of this division over to him after they served him with a civil law suit involving Lorenzo Williams and Jeff Nation.

when Mike Toole told the sheriff that he would NOT stop first responders at clearwater. The Direct quote was "Sorry Buddy, but I gotta pull rank here". CHIEF Toole was in control. Sheriff Hunt responded with "YOU are pulling rank on ME?" and magically two days later Chief Toole was arrested. Imagine that. Now, I guess Hunt really did show CHIEF Toole who was boss, and nothing will ever be done to stop it... Don't worry though residents of Clearwater... No Chief has lasted more than 3 years.

Why hasn't Mike Hunt had a news conference to tell the people here that the FBI in Washington found no civil rights violations against Jeff Nation in the Lorenzo Williams case? Because Hunt screwed up, jumped the gun and now can't man up to it because he was wrong. He would rather ruin a mans career than admit it. The former deputies mentioned before are all 10 times the man and civil servent Hunt pretends to be , not to mention they were in it for the people here, not to cover their own ass. Maybe its time for for these real men to make public the real Mike Hunt and workings of the ACSO so that the people know, their biggest down fall was not being one of Hunts puppets out of fear.

SLED should investigate both Dewayne Courtney and Mike Hunt for misconduct in office, etc. These guys are dirty. Karen why don't you go an interview Jeff Nation, Mark Patterson, Luke Williamson, and the rest of the outcasts and write a story about their take on the sheriff's office, and racists Dewayne Courtney and Mike Hunt? Also, get a comment or two from Jim Boatnight down in New Ellenton. Put it on the front page of the paper above the fold and you'll sell out, but we don't think Scott Hunter has the balls to do it.

How could Hunt hold off on arresting Mike Toole, then take his job as Fire Chief after stating that he wasn't going to do that? Sounds like he's a lying dog. The case with Mike Toole should have been settled before a magistrate in 60 days by law. What's up with that?

Comment Title: Aiken County is just overflowing with conflicts of interest!
It’s just amazing how those warrants just pop up when someone comes across some old filed paperwork. Aiken County has plenty of conflicts of interest on a daily basis. They have a deputy whose sister has a warrant and owes over $25,000 in back child support and the brother just hasn’t served the warrant? They see and know only what they want to at any particular time. Their oath must say to “protect” and “serve” when ready and willing to participate.

There is 1 sheriffs office dispatcher that dispatches for the entire county! See who's already getting special treatment? I agree with others, how can even think of doing this... As usual Sheriff Hunt has lied. Hunt stated in a earlier interview with 12 News that he would never take the Chiefs position at Clearwater.Someone needs to interview the other candidate's and what they were told and how the Clearwater Commission went about doing the interviews.Guess Hunt decided since he couldn't run Ch. Napier off after the train wreck then he would find a Dept. he could control.[ Hunt broke the law when he took over the command of the train wreck] As a taxpayer i know for a fact that Hunt is using County vehicles and fuel to run fire calls.His roster at Clearwater has several deputies volunteering down at Clearwater that live way over a 10 min response time.He can do as he pleases in Aiken County.Hunt fired people for misuse of County property so why is he not held by the same standards? WOW. There was a Commission meeting 3 months ago at Clearwater when Asst Chief Todd Durrance from Belvedere Fire Dept Told the Commission that if they didn't appoint Hunt then all the firemen of Clearwater would walk out.Whats funny about all this is Hunt and Durrance both were long time friends of Toole and were on Clearwater Fire Dept under him when he was Chief.Since Hunt has been over Clearwater he has stopped their !st Responder program. A vital service in that area.But we all know this will never be investigated because Hunt controls all in Aiken County. This is 1 taxpayer that will be glad when his term is up.

I haven’t been in that room in more than ten years, however it appears to be what is referred to as the Squad Room, it is not a kitchen, in those cabinets you will most likely find the various forms used by Deputies on a daily bases, just below it is a counter top with two more cabinets, in those cabinets, more forms, on the counter top and walls between the two you would most likely find the battery chargers for the hand held radios and at one time there was a coffee pot there. (well used) Going back to the days of Sheriff Grant and before, NO SHERIFF has ever been provided with proper conference space. As to conflict of interest, being Chief of Clearwater Fire Dept. (is a Volunteer position.) There is no Legal conflict there. To my knowledge all County Fire Depts. are legally Incorporated as Non profit originations. As to County Equipment being used, If it’s your home or business that’s on fire, you’ll be thankful they are there. I don’t know anyone in the Clearwater Fire Dept, .but I know a few Volunteer Firemen in Aiken County and if they were going in and out of my home or business when I was not there, I would want and expect the Sheriff’s Dept. presence. There will come a time in Aiken County (and not that far away) when you will have Aiken County Dept. of Public Safety. You will have County Police, (not deputies) County Fire Depts. And E.M.S. combined as one agency with one Director of Public Safety and a Chief for each division. You will continue to have Volunteer Firemen but also have more Full Time, Paid Fireman.

Is Hunt standing in a soup-kitchen with a Sheriffs office sign stuck to the wall behind him? Wow, that speaks volumes as to the financial conditions our county employees are in. "Here Sheriff, stand in front of this porta-potty and try to look professional, ok?" That is truly sad. Where are all of our tax dollars going? Probably on a plane to Argentina. Or better yet, the purchase of over 6000 umbrellas for SRS employees. Meanwhile, the sheriff gives a press conference in a kitchen? I know there are more important things to worry about in this county, I just couldnt help but point this out. I figured for sure the county or city would provide decent accommodations for press conferences. God forbid there be a national flood of media to the area, "Hi! World media, welcome to our kitchen!" Oh well, our defense could always be, "its a southern thaaaaang." : )

This is a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Hunt has no business dual office holding. If Hunt wants to be a fireman he needs to quite working as the sheriff. This is very very unfair to the other volunteer fire department throughout Aiken County because county taxpayer resources, such as deputy cars, etc. are going to be unfairly funneled to the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department. This is probably already happening. Hunt is nothing but a short mini hot dog trying to be a big man.
