S.H.O.P. benefits Cumbee Center

The Aiken Junior Woman's Club is holding the inaugural S.H.O.P (Sassy, Happy, Outrageous Party) on Dec. 3 to benefit the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons.

The S.H.O.P. will feature auction items for women and children such as Edisto Beach, Hilton Head and mountain weekend getaways, designer handbags, jewelry, a barbecue party, photography packages, Christmas gift baskets and make other items.

There will be wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres.

Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons, which helps abused women, their children, teens and men break the cycle of violence in their lives by offering safe, confidential shelter and services. In the past, AJWC gave to many organizations through the Grants of Hope program. This year, the decision was made to donate the proceeds to one organization. While Grants of Hope will not be sent out for 2010, it is the club's hope that they will continue in the future.

Event coordinator Angie Galan said the cause is close to the heart of Aiken Junior Woman's Club because the General Federation of Women's Clubs has its own domestic violence program, which raises awareness about the social issue.

Nandina Home & Design downtown has teamed up with the Aiken Junior Woman's Club to donate 10 percent of its proceeds that evening to the club during the store's open house celebration featuring special discounts on items. Nandina will be open after S.H.O.P. so those attending the event can attend Nandina's open house and bid on their donation.

Nandina co-owner Susan Victor said the store has even donated an item for the silent auction. It will be kept at the store so customers can bid on it.

"They were more than willing to work with us," Victor said.

The Ladies Night Out Silent Auction will be held at the Aiken County Historical Museum from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 292-2142.
