Perry police department broken into
11/14/2008 12:49 AM
By KAREN DAILY
Staff writer

Thieves took an SKS assault rifle and drug paraphernalia during a break-in at the Perry Police Department overnight Wednesday, but the suspects were only able to get the department's safe as far as the front lawn, officials say.

The safe is estimated to weigh about 1,500 pounds, and getting it from inside the building likely took the work of several people, according to officials.

There was evidence inside the safe, but they were not able to get to it, said Lt. Michael Frank, a spokesperson for the Aiken County Sheriff's office.

"They managed to haul the safe onto the front lawn, but they couldn't get it any further," the lieutenant said.

The safe could not be forced open, and investigators say they suspect the thieves took what they could and left.

The SKS rifle that was stolen was in the police department, but it had been kept in a storage area and was not with the safe.

The thieves broke in through the front door, the lieutenant added.

The sheriff's office is investigating the theft, and Frank said they may call in the assistance of state agents.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (800) 922-9709. Individuals also should call Crimestoppers of the Midlands at (888) CRIME-SC. Callers can remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of between $50 and $1,000.

Comment Title: Police Station Robbery
When I saw this story, I thought about the joke: "a police station had it's toilet stolen. The police have nothing to go on."

Comment Title: Law Degree
I got my law degree from Harvard Law School, but must admit that in private practice I have not focused on civil rights litigation.

Blah, blah, blah more people running their mouths who have no clue. So tell me, where did you two get your Law Degree's at? Apparently you seem to know quite a bit about the IV Ammendment.

Comment Title: Probable Cause
If people are being stopped and searched without probable cause that is a violation of their 4th amendment rights. Aiken has also been having a very bad problem with illegal searches, false arrests and officer misconduct issues (e.g., Jeff Nation, et al).

Comment Title: Perry's Police Dept. ??
It's ridiculous for this crossroads to even have a Police Dept. The "Policeman" that is there has no concept of "law 'n' order." He stops and searches without "probable cause," just to meet his quota. Gestapo techniques, akin to redneck justice. If their imbecilic policeman doesn't get some criminal justice education ... the little Town of Perry is in line for a lawsuit that will impact their tax-base.
