Perry police department broken into
Thieves took an SKS assault rifle and drug paraphernalia during a break-in at the Perry Police Department overnight Wednesday, but the suspects were only able to get the department's safe as far as the front lawn, officials say.
The safe is estimated to weigh about 1,500 pounds, and getting it from inside the building likely took the work of several people, according to officials.
There was evidence inside the safe, but they were not able to get to it, said Lt. Michael Frank, a spokesperson for the Aiken County Sheriff's office.
"They managed to haul the safe onto the front lawn, but they couldn't get it any further," the lieutenant said.
The safe could not be forced open, and investigators say they suspect the thieves took what they could and left.
The SKS rifle that was stolen was in the police department, but it had been kept in a storage area and was not with the safe.
The thieves broke in through the front door, the lieutenant added.
The sheriff's office is investigating the theft, and Frank said they may call in the assistance of state agents.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (800) 922-9709. Individuals also should call Crimestoppers of the Midlands at (888) CRIME-SC. Callers can remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of between $50 and $1,000.
