Korean War veterans group to honor vets 11/13/2009 12:35 AM By SUZANNE R. STONE Staff writer
The Korean War Veterans Association Inc. plans a program to honor America's vets this weekend.
KWVA Sgt. Harold F. Adkison Chapter 255 will hold a veterans program at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Horse Creek-Midland Valley Veterans Park on S.C. Highway 421 in Bath. Special guests for the program include Sen. Shane Massey and Rep. Roland J. Smith.
"We thought it would probably be more interesting to have music than somebody making a dry speech," said C. Clyde Hooks, the KWVA chapter commander. "Having good help, Judith Knight is my right-hand man, she did all the work on this program. We'll have local musicians and songwriters taking us on a trip to the past."
Musical performers will include the AAA Homeschool Band under the direction of Barb Rollins and a rendition of the national anthem by vocalist Ashley Buchanan, who will also recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Double-D, featuring local musicians Denny Kotz and Dennis Hall, will perform songs from the 1960s, and singer-songwriter-guitarist Carl Black will have a set of all-American songs from the World War II era to present-day, according to Hooks. Kotz is a veteran himself, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
"Our chapter is sponsoring this; the park usually gets a group to sponsor a veterans' program each year around this week," Hooks said.
The program is free and open to the public. For more information about the program or the KWVA chapter, call Hooks at 278-1039.
