Vote today in County, municipal elections 11/2/2009 6:52 PM By HALEY HUGHES Staff writer
Voters will cast ballots today in the Aiken County District 5 special election and several municipal elections.
Results of the District 5 election decide whether Republican Alexander "Sandy" Haskell or Democrat Judy Hamilton will replace Eddie Butler on County Council. Butler's resignation is official today.
All registered voters who live in District 5 are eligible to vote even if they did not vote in the Republican or Democratic primaries or run-off election.
The winner will serve out Butler's term, which ends December 2010.
"I have talked quite a bit with Eddie Butler about issues facing the County," Haskell said. "We have talked about the Horse Creek Valley water and sewer system, emergency services and local option sales tax, which has brought some wonderful things to the County. The reason I'm running is to continue the fiscally conservative management of Aiken County that it has been fortunate to have over the last decade or so."
Hamilton said what separates herself from Haskell is her experience as an average citizen.
"I feel that way because I have been going door to door to meet with people and learning what their concerns are. The main concern is bringing jobs in. I will take that to Council," she said. "Get out and vote. This is the one time your vote can make a difference."
The Town of Burnettown's election is for mayor and two Town Council seats. Current Councilman Chuck Mason and incumbent Mayor C.H. Williams vie for mayor. Town Council candidates are T.R. Carver, incumbent Bobby Griffin Jr., former Council member James McIntosh, David Glenn Mintor and Trevor Ward.
The Town of Monetta's election is for two Town Council seats. Candidates are incumbents Michael Cumbee and Charles McKay and challenger Nathan Shuler.
The Town of Wagener's election is also for two Town Council seats. Candidates are Marlon Hudson, incumbent John Hudson and Andy O'Byrne. Only one candidate is running for mayor, current Council member Mike Miller, so no election for the seat will be held.
Wagener Mayor Steve Carver is not seeking re-election.
All candidates for the Burnettown, Monetta and Wagener seats are nonpartisan.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in all voting districts.
Voters are required to present a form of identification at their polling place, such as their voter registration card, their South Carolina driver's license or a state-issued ID.
