A local business is moving because of economic hardships; however, it is moving forward with plans.
Abundant Vine Christian Store opened its doors in Hitchcock Plaza last December. After nearly 11 months in that location, the store is moving to Langley.
"We were not getting the sales necessary to pay our overhead, forcing us to move to a different location," owner Kay K. Mortimer, EA, said. "We are just moving for now. We will see how the next few months go and try to give it another year."
The new location is inside the Aiken Business Services/Bryant's Tax Service building at 100 Old Depot St. on the corner of Highway 421 and Old Depot Street.
"We are excited about coming to this area. We feel we will be of service to the Christian community and churches in the area," Mortimer said. "I hope our Aiken customers will find it in their hearts to move with us to Langley."
Abundant Vine Christian Store will officially open in its new location Wednesday. They will remain open at their current location until Saturday at 6 p.m.
The move isn't stopping the store from continuing to host guest authors and events. On Thursday, Nov. 12, at 6:30 p.m., the store will hold a writer's workshop under the leadership of South Carolina author Vonda Skelton. The workshop, for which the store has partnered with the Aiken County Public Library, will look at the "Writer's Brain" and "Five Fatal Flaws of Fiction." The cost of the class is $10 at the door.
On Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Millbrook Baptist Church gymnasium, Skelton will lead a ladies' conference called "Sugar and Spice." The event features Aiken's own Stephanie Brantley leading praise and worship, as well as a presentation entitled "Celebrating Womanhood" by Skelton and her original skit "Solomon's Beloved."
There will be a fruit and dessert bar. The cost is $8, and tickets are available at Abundant Vine in Langley and Booklovers Bookstore, 1886 Huntsman Drive.
On Saturday, Nov. 14, Skelton will be at the Christian Store for a book signing from 10 to 11 a.m. For more information on Skelton, visit www.vondaskelton.com.
"Our dream and desire is to maintain the Christian retail in the Aiken area," Mortimer said.
