Marsh tackies to be in carriage parade
This year's Aiken Fall Steeplechase carriage parade will feature a new entry that has a long and rich history in South Carolina.
The marsh tacky, which was officially recognized in July with the designation of State Heritage Horse, will be part of this year's Carriage Parade festivities. The carriage parade will be held at 1:15 p.m., after the meet's first race.
"I'm very excited about it," said Jackie McFadden, Carolina Marsh Tacky Association board member. "It's an honor to be invited."
McFadden is one of the many marsh tacky advocates and supporters who are thrilled that the state finally decided to recognize the breed as the state heritage horse.
"It's extremely satisfying that the horse was recognized with the designation," said McFadden. "We want everyone to see the horse. We'll be active in other events and trail rides around the state. This is going to be the start of something big."
The breed is believed to have been derived from stock brought to coastal Carolina by Spanish explorers. The horses had a somewhat cloistered existence, living in isolation in the Lowcountry. They have been used in a variety of capacities including herding and hunting, as well as endurance and competitive trail horses.
"We're very excited that the marsh tacky, the South Carolina State Heritage Horse, will be premiering at the Fall Steeplechase," said Mia Miller of Aiken Steeplechase Association. "They're going to follow the carriage parade. There will be about 10 or 12 of the horses participating."
The gates open at 9:30 a.m. with the Village of Shops open at 10 a.m. and the Guarantor Tent Party starts at 11 a.m. The first race is at 1 p.m., and the carriage parade is at 1:15 p.m.
General admission tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. The new general parking is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children 6 and younger are free.
