Couple killed in car wreck
An Aiken couple traveling east on I-20 Monday was killed in Lexington County when a tractor trailer's rear tire hub broke loose and crossed into oncoming traffic and into the couple's car.
Patricia Ann Miller, 45, and Perry A. Miller, 44, both of Aiken, died shortly before 7 p.m.
Both were wearing seat belts, officials said.
The 2004 Honda Accord the two were traveling in was headed east on the interstate about 6:50 p.m.
A 2002 Freightliner tractor trailer was headed in the opposite direction across the median when two of its rear tires broke free from the truck and crashed through the median and into oncoming traffic.
The tires struck the Honda which then ran off the road and down an embankment near mile marker 58, where the two were killed.
The driver of the truck, Samuel G. Wanyoara, 32, of Texas, was also wearing a seat belt.
He was not injured.
The state's accident reconstruction team and state's transport police are investigating the fatal crash and investigating what may have caused the tires to break free from the vehicle.
