Local motorcycle group holds political run
Thunder was heard all over Aiken County on Saturday, but it was not the weather.
The Dixie Thunder Aiken ABATE organization held a "Run for the Legislature." Dixie Thunder is the local chapter of the ABATE of South Carolina, a state motorcyclists' rights organization that stands for "A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments."
While one of the group's main focuses is to raise motorcycle safety awareness for drivers of both cyclists and vehicles, they also like to have a little fun and even get political from time to time. Saturday's event was a combination of all of the above.
"Our Dixie Thunder-Aiken chapter of ABATE of South Carolina actively monitors motorcycle-related legislation on local, state and federal levels. We encourage all members to become politically involved, to effect positive legislation toward maintaining freedom of choice," the group's mission statement says.
The "Run for the Legislature" began at 10 a.m. with the first group of bikes and vehicles headed out to pick up their stamps to qualify for cards.
"The early birds are always here rain or shine," agreed several members.
Despite the morning chill, nearly 30 riders were ready to go with more on the way. The rules were simple, pick up a stamp to later exchange for a playing card at five different stops and go for the best hand possible. The winner received a $100 gas card and bragging rights until next time.
Contestants had until 2 p.m. to return to the starting point called Thunder Valley, at which time ABATE members gathered to hear from politicians running for the state legislature.
"All candidates from all parties have been invited to speak concerning current issues of interest," said Rick Cooper of Dixie Thunder Aiken ABATE.
