Utah firm gets HVAC contract

A $44 million contract to has been awarded to provide the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system for the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication (MOX) Facility at Savannah River Site.

Utah-based Superior Air Handling has announced that it received the contract to install a highly specialized nuclear-grade HVAC system for the MOX facility.

Shaw AREVA MOX Services LLC, the contractor for the MOX facility, selected Superior Air Handling for part of the $4.86 billion facility that will take surplus weapons-grade plutonium, remove impurities and mix it with uranium oxide to form MOX fuel pellets for reactor fuel assemblies.

These assemblies will be irradiated in commercial nuclear power reactors. Operations are set to begin in 2016 after extensive inspection and testing of the facility.

This is the second project for Superior related to the National Nuclear Security Administration's programs. The company recently completed the HVAC air distribution system for the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility at the Y-12 site in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
