Girl dies after choking on screw
An Aiken family is grieving the sudden loss of their 4-year-old child who choked to death late Monday on a metal bolt while she was playing in her room at her family's home.
Macy Lane Steele died from asphyxiation, according to the Aiken County Coroner's Office.
The girl was playing in her bedroom shortly after 7:30 p.m. when officials believe she picked up a screw that was about an inch-and-a-half long and put it in her mouth.
The metal screw likely came loose from a piece of furniture in her room, officials said.
Macy walked out of her room to find her mother, Felicia Steele, in the family's den, where her mother noticed the girl was choking, official said.
Felicia Steele tried to help the girl, and a 911 call was quickly made.
Couchton Fire and Rescue personnel and an Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the home, where they found the girl lying on the floor in the den.
She was unconscious, deputies reported.
Aiken County EMS workers arrived and dislodged the object from her throat before rushing her to the hospital.
She was pronounced dead at 10 p.m.
