Voter registration deadline looms
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 special election is approaching.
Those eligible to vote in the special election should register in person at the Aiken County Registration and Elections Office by 5 p.m. Friday. Otherwise, applications should be mailed to the office with a postmark dated no later than Saturday.
Registration and Elections Executive Director Stuart Bedenbaugh said people must bring a picture ID and proof of address to register in person. If opting to mail, applicants must attach copies of these to the voting application paperwork.
Next month's special election will fill a seat on Aiken County Council and a number of other municipal seats.
Not only are Alexander "Sandy" Haskell and Judy Hamilton going head-to-head over the Council District 5 seat, several candidates are also vying for mayoral and Council seats in Monetta, Burnettown and Wagener.
To be eligible to cast a ballot, voters must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old on or before the election.
Voting applications are available at www.scvotes.org or at Aiken County post offices. Mail applications to Aiken County Registration and Elections, 916 Vaucluse Road, Aiken, SC 29801.
