Vote in District 5 Republican run-off today 9/28/2009 8:33 PM By HALEY HUGHES Staff writer
Voters pick their candidate of choice today in the Aiken County Council District 5 Republican run-off.
Candidates Barry Baggott and Alexander "Sandy" Haskell go head-to-head at the polls as the County moves one step closer to determining who will replace County Councilman Eddie Butler when he steps down Nov. 3.
Those eligible to vote today live in District 5. Anyone who voted in the Republican primary or who did not vote at all on Sept. 15 is eligible to vote in this run-off.
Voters who cast ballots in the Democratic primary on Sept. 15 are ineligible to vote in this run-off.
Baggott and Haskell are hoping for a better voter turnout today and urge everyone who is eligible to head to the polls. Only 6 percent of registered voters in District 5 cast a ballot two weeks ago.
Both men are newcomers to the political scene, and both have name recognition.
Baggott's mother, Carolyn Baggott, has served on the North Augusta City Council since 1991. Baggott's father, Jim, served on the Aiken County Planning Commission for 20 years before being elected to Council to fill the District 5 seat.
Haskell's family owned and operated a dairy for many years.
Baggott has said his No. 1 priority is job creation.
Haskell said he will continue Council's history of excellence in remaining fiscally conservative.
Whoever wins the run-off will advance to the Nov. 3 special election against Democratic primary winner Judy Hamilton.
Polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters are required to present a form of identification at their polling place, such as their voter registration card, their South Carolina driver's license or a state-issued ID.
