Herb Faire tradition continues

The 2009 Fall Herb Faire is coming to Montmorenci this weekend.

The Herb Faire is a spring and autumn tradition at the historic Montmorenci home known as Pascalina, at 3250 Charleston Highway (U.S. Highway 278). This year's Fall Herb Faire will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Pascalina and will feature a variety of plants, natural foods, handcrafts and other goodies, according to organizer Linda Oswald.

"We've got three new vendors: a lady who does herb topiaries; Shumpert Milk is coming with fresh local milk; and we're going to have boiled peanuts here for the first time," Oswald said.

Other local and regional vendors will have antiques, plants and herbs, stone-ground grits and cornmeal, garden accessories, herbal soaps and lotions, herbal food products, goat cheese, local honey, fall wreaths, woodcrafts, jewelry, pottery, quilts and baked goods by the area's Mennonite bakers.

"The Mennonites who bring baked goods are also going to do for us some fresh sandwiches made on homemade bread, fresh-squeezed lemonade and meadow tea, which is an herbal tea," Oswald said.

The Herb Faire tradition was established by Oswald's mother, Pascalina proprietor Jackie Heath, and her neighbor Ginny Sherman. The pair wanted to share their plants, herbs, seeds, tips and love of gardening with the community. The festival has grown in attendance, and Oswald said there are plans in the works to add fresh local produce to the Faire's lineup next year.

Admission to the 2009 Fall Herb Faire is free. For more information or for directions to Pascalina, call Linda Oswald at 646-3774.
