Vote today in District 5 Council election
Voters head to the polls today to pick their candidate of choice in the Aiken County District 5 primary elections.
Four Republican candidates and two Democratic candidates square off in the race to replace Aiken County Councilman Eddie Butler, who will step down from the district seat Nov. 3.
County District 5 polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters are required to present a form of identification at their polling place, such as their voter registration card, their South Carolina driver's license or a state-issued ID.
Only those who live in County District 5 are eligible to vote in the primaries.
Candidates in the Republican primary are Barry Baggott, Andy Cheek, Alexander "Sandy" Haskell and Larry Murphy.
Candidates in the Democratic primary are Judy Hamilton and James Richardson.
Voters will be asked which party's primary they wish to vote in and will only view that ballot. They cannot vote in both.
A candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote plus one to avoid a run-off election. Should there be a run-off election, it will be held Sept. 29.
Butler will step down from the District 5 seat next month after serving roughly 20 years on County Council. Whoever is elected to replace him will serve the remainder of the term, which ends December 2010.
