By RACHEL JOHNSON Staff writer
An evening fit for Carnegie Hall is coming to Aiken.
The Aiken Jazz Society will host a concert with international jazz master Wycliffe Gordon on Sunday, Oct. 4, during JazzFest 2009 at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.
Gordon is one of the most widely recognized trombone players in the world of jazz. He frequently performs at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. Gordon, a performer, composer, arranger and educator, has recorded 13 CDs and appeared in Ken Burns' extensive documentary on the origins of jazz.
Gordon travels as a music ambassador for the U.S. State Department, presenting concerts around the globe. He is a frequent guest of Wynton Marsalis, a top jazz trumpeter.
The Aiken Jazz Society has a two-fold purpose. In addition to presenting quality jazz in Aiken, the society strives to provide an educational opportunity for local high school and college musicians to explore the world of jazz.
Gordon will conduct a free workshop for students on Oct. 5 at the USC Aiken Etherredge Center.
Tickets to JazzFest 2009 are $30. Tickets are available by contacting the box office at 648-1438. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the box office at 126 Newberry St., S.W.
