The Tams to play in Aiken on Friday
8/26/2009 9:01 PM

By Staff Reports
More than four decades of touring and recording, hundreds of regional hits and a distinctive style punctuated by trademark Tam O'Shanter caps have made legends of the latest headliners at the Rose Hill Estate summer concert series.

The Tams, based in Atlanta, will perform Friday night at the historic downtown inn. Showtime is 7 p.m.. and tickets are $27 and are available by calling 648-1181.

"We're excited about coming to Aiken," said co-lead singer "L'il Redd" Albert Cottle, who shares the frontman cuties with his father, original Tams member Charles Pope. "Everybody's going to have a good time, a high-energy show with songs they know by heart."

Created in 1962, the Tams began singing and dancing in local night spots for $1.25 each - some of which they used to purchase their matching caps to wear on-stage. They were signed to Arlen Records and had their first national chart hit in 1962 with "Untie Me," which hit No. 12 on the R&B charts. In 1963, the Tams were signed by ABC Records, and their first album produced the Top 10 R&B hit, "What Kind of Fool" - a song that has become a Carolina Beach Music Standard.

Other hits include "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy," "I've Been Hurt" and "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me." The Tams have earned one Platinum and two Gold records over the course of more than 15 studio albums, and they have performed with such luminaries as Gladys Knight & The Pips, Jackie Wilson and many more.

They were asked by Jimmy Buffett, who cites The Tams as one of his favorite bands from his college days, to sing backup on his 1999 hit "Flesh and Bone" from the "Beach House On The Moon" CD and to tour with the ambassador of the laid-back lifestyle.

"That was wild, man," Cottle said. "They came to us and said, 'Jimmy Buffett wants y'all to record with him.' And we said, okay. And they said, 'You don't act all that excited.' Honestly, I didn't know who Jimmy Buffett was. But I found out in a hurry. That was wild. Just wild."

The Tams also have been inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Hall of Fame and the Beach Music Hall of Fame.

During the Friday night concert, Rose Hill Estate will offer a $12.95 dinner buffet and a cash bar. For more information, call 648-1181.
