'Slave Potter Dave' author Leonard Todd to be honored
Edgefield author Leonard Todd will receive state-level honors Friday for his book "Carolina Clay: The Life and Legend of the Slave Potter Dave."
Todd will be one of the guests of honor at the South Carolina Center for the Book Awards ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday at the Aiken County Public Library. Formerly known as the Palmetto Book Award, the Center expanded the award last year to include an award for teaching and an award for literary arts advocacy.
Todd will be presented the 2009 South Carolina Center for the Book Award for Writing; the Award for Teaching goes this year to Libby Collins of Dent Middle School in Columbia; and the Literary Arts Advocacy Award will go to the Columbia weekly newspaper The Free Times.
"Of course I'm very happy and grateful to the Center for the Book for honoring me in this way. I wish there were a way I could share this award with Dave, the great African-American slave potter who is the subject of my book. His life has been inspiring to me and to so many others," said Todd.
In honor of Todd's award, the library will have examples of Edgefield pottery of the period described in Todd's book on display in the second-floor display cases. The Aiken County Historical Museum is collaborating with the library on the exhibit.
"We're excited, and I'm very honored that the South Carolina Center for the Book asked us to host this event. We and our public libraries in the four counties that we serve are an important partner in the literary arts in our communities," said Mary Jo Dawson, director of the Aiken-Bamberg-Barnwell-Edgefield Regional Libraries System.
The South Carolina Center for the Book is an affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Located in Columbia, it is a joint project of the South Carolina State Library, the USC School of Library and Information Science, and the Humanities Council South Carolina.
