18-year-old partially ejects from vehicle, dies
An 18-year-old woman died Tuesday from injuries she received when she lost control of her vehicle, crashed and partially ejected from the car, according to officials.
Tiffany Furtick, of Old Shoals Road, was unrestrained and suffered multiple body trauma, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Her three passengers, however, were all properly restrained an uninjured, including her 2-year-old son, he said. The boy was belted in a child safety seat.
None of the survivors were transported for treatment.
The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on a dirt portion of Old Shoals Road. Although heavy rains had bombarded parts of Aiken County, officials said they do not believe weather was a factor in the crash.
Carlton said Furtick was traveling south in a 1999 Ford Escort on Old Shoals Road near Wire Road when she lost control of the vehicle, and it crashed into an embankment. The Escort rolled over to the driver's side. She was trapped, according to police radio traffic.
The woman, two men and the child had left a convenience store shortly before the fatal crash.
Speed is thought to be a contributing factor to the crash.
This is the 18th fatal crash in Aiken County in 2010.
