The Aiken Area Council on Aging Inc. now offers transit to and from Aiken in the more rural parts of Aiken County.

Rural Transit now runs in Wagener, Perry, Salley, Jackson, Beech Island, New Ellenton and North Aiken (the Shilo Heights, Balltown and industrial park areas).

"This is to get people out of the rural areas," said Sam Reid, transportation director with the Council on Aging. "They are stuck down in those areas."

This service will help people get to the Best Friend Express, which will get them to work, shopping destinations, school, medical appointments and more.

Rural Transit connects with Best Friend Express at sites like Aiken Technical College, USC Aiken and places in North Augusta so riders can transfer onto a Best Friend Express bus.

"We are assisting the community," Reid said.

Rural Transit runs routes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Monday, July 6 is "Rural Day" where people can ride free. The fare otherwise is $2 per 10 miles.

"If it's reliable and it makes stops where people need, it could be a very big program for Jackson," said Mayor Todd Etheredge. "I am glad we were included. I think it's wonderful."

Call (803) 648-6493 or (866) 228-5151 for schedules and more information.

The Aiken Area Council on Aging Inc. is located at 159 Morgan St. S.W.
