New subdivision focused on 'EasyLiving'

Bill Beazley Homes Inc. held an open house Thursday to introduce a new subdivision of homes in Graniteville. What makes Gregg's Mill unique is the homes themselves, which are expected to be user friendly for people of all ages.

The expected 450 homes Beazley will be building in the subdivision are being marketed as EasyLiving, part of the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) National Green Building Program and affordable.

"We're excited. We've been developing neighborhoods for 33 years and this development will really energize this part of Aiken County," said Stephen Beazley, vice president and director of construction for Bill Beazley Homes, Inc. "We're building a better house."

The EasyLiving Home offers features such as a step-free entrance, a main-floor bedroom, at least one accessible bathroom with adequate maneuvering space as well as wider doorways and hallways.

"They are built for people to live in for the rest of their lives," Beazley said of the homes which cater to, but aren't exclusively for, older residents. "We're liable to have more younger families."

Green Building is a design and construction practice that promotes buildings that are energy efficient, utilize construction materials wisely - including recycled, renewable and reused resources - and are designed and constructed to ensure they're healthy for their occupants. Beazley Homes says its goal is to build every home to a standard that is energy- and water-efficient, from materials that provide a healthy living environment.

"This is the first production in the CSRA of NAHB Green Building homes," Beazley said.

The large amount of trees in the subdivision supports Beazley's goal of being as eco-friendly as possible. Many builders simply raze the earth in new developments. Beazley has made a concerted effort to keep many of the trees.

"We're trying to save as many trees as possible. They are a valuable asset to the neighborhood," he said.

Value is something of great interest to the buyers Beazley is trying to connect with. It should help that the houses in Gregg's Mill are priced from $130,000 to $170,000. For those in the market, that's a reasonable price for a brand-new house located in between Aiken and Augusta. Of the 450 planned units, seven are completed and one has been sold.

"People don't know about the neighborhood and what we're about," Beazley said at the event open to realtors and the public. "We want to spread the word this is a terrific area to have a house."

Comment Title: "Raze the earth?"
RE: "Many builders simply raze the earth in new developments." The writer has invented a new use for the word "raze." "Raze" means to destroy. Cutting down trees is not destroying the earth. It is destroying the trees.
