ACP's 'Doubt: A Parable' begins Friday 6/18/2009 12:09 AM
By RACHEL JOHNSON Staff writer
Act one is performed on the main stage while act two plays out in the minds of audiences hours after they leave the theater.
"Doubt: A Parable" written by John Patrick Shanley starts the summer season and comes to life on the Aiken Community Playhouse Black Box stage on Friday evening at 8 p.m.
The performance tackles a controversial topic and allows the audience to make their own decision.
"When I first read the script three years ago, my first reaction was I don't want to touch this, it's too controversial. By the time I reached the end of the play, my reaction changed 180 percent and I thought, 'I have to direct this play,'" said Dave Howard, director. "The playwright has created a beautiful way to leave it up to the audience. I like plays that make the audience think."
Each member of the cast feels passionately about portraying their character accurately.
"I first became familiar with the play shortly after it won the Pulitzer," said Tony Baughman, who stars as Father Flynn. "It is a brilliantly written piece of theater. There are so many nuances in the language."
"As soon as I saw we were doing this play, I began thinking about it," said Cherie Moritz, who plays Sister Aloysius. "I very much wanted this part and was fortunate to get it."
"This is the first script I have worked with where every word is so precisely written that I feel the need to have every single word correct. It is so intricately woven," said Barbara Lewis, who plays Sister James.
Tickets are currently on sale by contacting the ACP Box Office at 648-1438. Performances will be held Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. as well as June 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 or Summer Season subscriptions are available.
