Pair charged with murder

Two men have been charged with the November shooting death of a 19-year-old man whose body was found covered by debris in Windsor last February.

Matthew Lamar Jackson Jr., 22, of Windsor Road in Springfield, and Tyrone Akeem Gleaton, 18, of Holly Street in Wagener, have been charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The two have been accused of killing 19-year-old Marques Tyler last year.

Tyler was last seen by his aunt in Springfield on Nov. 19. He left the area with a unidentified friend and was never heard from again, deputies said at the time.

In February, a couple walking in the area found a body, which was later identified as Tyler's.

The body was found Feb. 10 on Stillwater Road in Windsor. It was covered by debris.

It wasn't until May that investigators first named Jackson as a person of interest.

He turned himself in to the Aiken County detention center earlier this week on unrelated charges. He was booked for unlawful use of a telephone and a bench warrant for a weapons violation and was then interviewed about the murder.

On Thursday, Gleaton was arrested and both were charged with Tyler's death. The arrests came about seven months after the murder.

Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt said a number of man hours went into the investigation, adding that investigators were determined to bring closure to the victim's family.

"We had a lead investigator on this case and several others to assist him run down leads," Hunt said. "This was a hard one to solve, but persistence paid off."

The sheriff's office does not close a case until it is solved.

"The time it takes to solve a murder depends on the physical evidence and a number of other factors," he said. "It can take years of hard work."

Investigators have not released a motive for the crime.
