"Equitrekking," the Public Broadcasting System television series hosted by native South Carolinian Darley Newman, received two Daytime Emmy Award nominations.

The show, now in its fourth season, is shot in high definition, and it's the first television travel series to explore the world while on horseback.

The series received Outstanding Special Class Series and Outstanding Single Camera Cinematography nominations.

Newman and her husband, Chip Ward (the show's executive producer), created the series and, along with cinematographer Greg Barna, take viewers in many instances to seldom seen locales around the world, with a number of the places that are only accessible by horseback.

"Greg does a lot of riding on horseback and has embraced the challenge of shooting on horseback, which at times can be hard to maneuver," said Newman.

The small crew has a tremendous work ethic and great confidence in each others abilities and talents; the series has taken viewers to a number of places, including Ireland, Uruguay, Belize, Hawaii, central Turkey, southern Spain, Scotland, Utah, Quebec, Texas, Alaska and Wales.

"We only have three people doing the show, so it keeps the budget down," said Newman. "We get along so well with each other, and we know each other so well. Greg's family has come with us on a couple of the shoots, to Hawaii and Alaska, and they've met us, and then taken a vacation afterward."

The show provides viewers with the opportunity to have an in-depth look at different places in an educational and informative manner.

"That's what makes the show so cool; we're able to interact with the local people," said Newman. "We go to places that other travel shows don't encounter. The people we meet and ride with have a passion for their horses and their area."

The trio found out about the Emmy nominations online and received e-mails from PBS system friends.

"We're so surprised, very glad and excited," said Newman. "It's amazing. We work really hard on the series, interviewing, shooting, planning, editing and writing the show. It's very rewarding when we're done with a show. You're always working on deadline, but it's great to see the end result."

"Equitrekking" can be seen Thursdays at 7 p.m. on SCETV.
