Early morning Aiken fire kills mother and son
An early morning house fire has claimed the the lives of a mother and child, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Aiken Public Safety responded to a house fire at 910 Hampton Ave. NW shortly before 2 a.m. Friday where they found a woman and her two children discovered near the door.
Two victims were transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, and the third, a five year old was transported to the Joseph Stills Burn Center in Augusta .
The mother, 35-year-old Joy L. Thomas, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:20 a.m.
Her 7 year old son, Jesse J. Tracey III, was pronounced dead around 3 a.m., Carlton said.
Information regarding the five-year-old child who was transported to Augusta is unclear at this time, the coroner said.
The house fire was discovered by neighbors around 2 a.m.
No foul play is suspected.
Aiken County Sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Troy Elwell said preliminary evidence shows the fire ignited in a room where a power strip was overloaded.
