Library offering 'Heroic Rodent' movie showings

If you give a mouse a movie, you get a great way to fill the afternoons for children on spring break.

The Aiken County Public Library is offering a series of film screenings for "Heroic Rodent Movie Week." The movies will all begin at 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the meeting room.

"We haven't done a series of movies like this before, but we thought we'd try it and see what results we get," said library manager Michael Swan. "'The Tale of Despereaux' is coming out on DVD that week - I've heard the book it's from is really good - and it started us thinking about how it's the third or fourth movie to come out the last few years with a mouse or rat hero. We've got 'The Tale of Despereaux,' 'Ratatouille,' 'Stuart Little' - that's from another great book that was one of my favorite books when I was in that age group - and 'Mouse Hunt.'"

The week opens with "Ratatouille" from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday. The G-rated animated romp follows the adventures of a rat with a gourmet palate as he struggles to become a five-star chef with the help of his hapless human friend.

"Stuart Little" plays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Based on the classic novel by E.B. White, Stuart the mouse is adopted by the Littles to raise not as a pet, but as their son. But Snowbell, the Littles' cat-in-residence, is having none of this reversal of the food chain.

"The Tale of Despereaux" will be Wednesday's movie. Rated G, the story of a well-read mouse, a discontented rat, a servant girl and a princess will be on screen from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the library's meeting room.

The series concludes from 3 to 4:45 p.m. Thursday with the PG-rated "Mouse Hunt." Ernie and Lars have furnished their home impeccably with antiques and treasures. There's just one flaw in their showplace: a resident mouse who just won't go away.

The library will be closed in observance of Good Friday on Friday, April 10, and in observance of Easter on Sunday, April 12.
