Rivals take to field in third leg of Triple Crown
The third leg of the Aiken Triple Crown will be played this Saturday, and this year's Pacers and Polo game will be as intense as it has been in previous years.
The rivalry between Burger King and Biddle Realty will be revisited at the Powderhouse Fields, and Burger King is looking to avenge last year's loss to their rival. Biddle Realty claimed victory as the result of a coin toss ending four years of frustration.
After overcoming a 6-4 deficit, Biddle Realty tied the game during the last chukker of play. The final chukkers were played during a steady downpour.
The game also serves as an unofficial start to the Aiken spring polo season. The Southeast Tourism Society named Pacers and Polo to its top 20 winter events in 2008.
David Wigdahl scored four goals for Biddle Realty in last year's victory, and his horse Cheetah was selected as the game's Best Playing Pony.
The proceeds from the game go to support the USC Aiken Pacer Club, which is the booster organization of the athletic department.
The six-chukker contest will start at 1:30 p.m., and the Biddle Realty and Burger King team rosters will be composed of players familiar to area polo fans.
Saturday's contest will give fans a great opportunity to see a game that combines speed and danger with the athletic grace and power of the equine athlete.
The gates open at 11 a.m. For more information, call the USC Aiken athletic department at 641-3486.
