Kids are beach bound at Spring Break Art Camp

The Aiken Center for the Arts is taking registrations for its 2010 Spring Break Art Camp. The camp, which is open to children ages 5 or older, will be held the week of April 5-9 at the Arts Center.

The theme for the artwork at the weeklong camp is "Beach Bound." Campers will work in a variety of 2-D and 3-D mediums to create artwork based on the ocean and its shores.

"Art projects for both the younger and older age groups will be based on the beach and the ocean. Projects include 3-D beach sculptures, paintings of palm trees, mixed-media fish, batiking, paper weaving, papier-mâché lighthouses, resists, wire sculpture, clay and tie-dyeing and more," said Cathy Rumble, camp director. "Each camp offers children from age 5 through middle school the opportunity to experiment with multiple mediums. Families can choose between full- and half-day camps. There is no repetition of the projects as morning and afternoon projects are different each day."

Full- and half-day options are available for the week. Campers bring their own food and all art supplies, and camp T-shirts are provided.

"New this year, each camper will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp thanks to our generous sponsors, Baker Family Dentistry and Aiken Saddlery," Rumble said.

Tuition is $210 for the full-day camp and $125 for the half-day camps. Arts Center members receive a 10 percent discount on all classes and camps.

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available to qualified applicants.

Enrollment is limited, and pre-registration is required.
