Sorority collecting dresses to help girls attend prom
A USC Aiken sorority is collecting dresses for area high school students to wear at their proms.
Omega Phi Alpha, a national community service sorority, is collecting prom dresses for Becca's Closet. This is the second year the sorority has held the event in which free prom dresses are available for high school girls who are in need of one.
Amanda Abernathy, a member of Omega Phi Alpha, said they have already gathered a few dresses but would like to see more. They are accepting dresses of all sizes along with shoes and accessories. The dresses can be used or new.
On March 26, Omega Phi Alpha will display the dresses and students can come pick one out. Where the event will be held has not been decided as of yet.
Becca's Closet is a national service that was formed in honor of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman of Davie, Fla., who died in a car accident in 2003. Kirtman collected more than 250 dresses to donate to fellow students who didn't have the funds to buy a gown for prom. After her passing, Kirtman's idea spread and chapters of Becca's Closet were formed around the country.
To make a donation, call Abernathy at 645-4427 or e-mail ajabernathy@usca.edu.
