Students to compete in district spelling bee

The Aiken County Spelling Bee will be held at the URS Center for the Arts Monday at 7 p.m.

The contest will feature 10 first- and second-place winners from each of the five attendance areas within the Aiken County School District. The event is open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

The area competitions were open to public, private and for the first time, home-school students fifth through eighth grade.

"It's good to have the whole community involved," said Michele Conner, the event coordinator and a school district executive. "It's going to be a good competition."

The sponsors are URS and Savannah River Remediation, the school district and the Aiken Standard. The newspaper is providing plaques for the top two finishers, while URS and SRR are donating financial support for the reception and prizes for the participants.
