A little encouragement can go a long way, and a workshop offered by the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum may give a glimpse into the future work of the next Raoul Duffy, Edgar Degas, George Stubbs or Pierre Bellocq.
The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum is offering a "Drawing Horses for Kids Workshop" on Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. Local equine and sporting artist Georgianna "Girl" Conger Wolcott will conduct the workshop on how to draw horses.
The workshop is open to children ages 6 through 12, and is free. Those attending the workshop will receive the book by Don Mayne "Drawing Horses (That Look Real!)" Those taking part in the workshop are responsible for bringing their own sketch book, erasers and drawing pencils. The workshop class is limited to 15 students. Registration is required and ends on Feb. 11 at 5 p.m.
"She (Conger Wolcott) and I have been talking off and on about doing something that would combine art and horses for kids," said Lisa Hall, City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism department and Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum program supervisor. "We wanted to get kids interested in drawing horses."
The area is home to many talented artists, but Conger Wolcott seemed to be the logical choice for the Drawing Horses for Kids Workshop, said Hall.
