Retailer settles with Winfrey's mom

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- A high-end fashion retailer in Wisconsin said a financial dispute with Oprah Winfrey's mother has been settled.

Details of the agreement between Vernita Lee of Milwaukee and the Brookfield store, Valentina, have not yet been filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

But Valentina co-owner Tony Chirchirillo told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the store will receive some of the $155,000 he said it was owed.

Valentina sued Lee in 2008 for failing to pay the bill. Lee's attorneys argued the store should not have extended credit to her because of her earlier troubles paying a bill.

Attorneys for Lee and Valentina did not immediately return phone calls Tuesday seeking comment.

A judge still has to approve the settlement. A hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 7.

Little Richard asks fans for prayers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Little Richard is asking fans to pray for his speedy recovery after undergoing hip surgery at a Tennessee hospital.

The Rev. Bill Minson, a family friend, said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been in some pain leading up to the surgery but continued to maintain a rigorous performing schedule.

Minson said the 76-year-old asked him to tell fans "to get ready to rock 'n' roll with him in the new year because he's coming back strong."

The Macon, Ga., native lives in Tennessee. He is recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Travolta family goes to movie opening

OCALA, Fla. (AP) -- John Travolta and his family have helped raise money for charities in their home state of Florida with a screening of his new comedy.

The actor, his wife, Kelly Preston, and their daughter, Ella Bleu, greeted hundreds of fans on the red carpet Friday for Disney's "Old Dogs."

The family expressed its appreciation to the community, ending their thanks with: "Love you, Ocala."

The private gala raised money for five nonprofit agencies selected by Travolta: The Jett Travolta Foundation, Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council, Project Hope, the Marion County Public Safety Assistance Trust and the Humane Society of Marion County.

In January, the couple's 16-year-old son, Jett, died at the family vacation home in the Bahamas.

Chief guilty in Parker baby case

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- An eastern Ohio police chief was convicted of three felonies Friday but was acquitted of burglary charges in an alleged break-in at the home of a woman who carried twin girls for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

A jury found suspended Martins Ferry Chief Barry Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. He was acquitted on charges of burglary and unauthorized used of property or services.

Carpenter put his head in his hands after the verdict was read in Belmont County court.

"The bottom line is that there is a victim in this case whose privacy was so gravely intruded upon," Ohio Assistant Attorney General Emily Laube said. "If you can't trust the police, who can you trust?

Messages seeking comment were left for Carpenter's attorney, Dennis McNamara, and for Parker-Broderick spokesman Simon Halls.

Prosecutors alleged that Carpenter broke into Michelle Ross' home in May, took items related to her pregnancy and the surrogacy, and schemed with the Police Chief Chad Dojack of neighboring Bridgeport to sell the items to celebrity photographers.

Dojack faces trial in January on two counts of complicity to burglary and one count of complicity to receiving stolen property.

Carpenter had testified that he went into the home to check it out because he saw a door open. He said he took photos of a surrogacy file that contained two ultrasound pictures and of a plaster cast of a pregnant stomach but did not take anything from the home.
