Readers get to choose favorite artwork for cover 11/20/2009 12:34 AM Staff Reports Staff Reports
It's time to vote for your favorite student artwork to appear on the cover of Park Bench magazine.
The Aiken County School District, the Aiken Standard and the City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism again partnered for the cover art contest that will feature artwork from Aiken County elementary students.
Twice a year, an elementary school is selected and, as part of the student's art classes, the art teacher works with students to produce works of art related to the parks, recreation and tourism programs.
The committee selects artwork from up to 30 students. The City of Aiken Arts Commission judges the entries and selects the five finalists based on effort, creativity and composition. You choose the winner.
Beginning today, the Aiken Standard will run ballots on selected days to vote for your favorite drawing.
These ballots may be mailed to the City. Also, www.aikenstandard.com will direct you to an online voting poll; or you may visit www.cityofaiken.net to vote for your favorite drawing. The City of Aiken's government access channel, Channel 4 on Atlantic Broadband, will also show the art selections.
You may view the artwork during programming about community events and the Aiken County School District. These sections begin at 3:01 a.m., 5:45 a.m., 6:12 a.m., 6:36 a.m., 7:01 a.m., 8:55 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 9:33 a.m., 10:56 a.m., 2:01 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 6:01 p.m., 6:31 p.m., 7:18 p.m., 9:27 p.m., 9:53 p.m. and 11:21 p.m.
Voting will continue through Nov. 30. The winner will be featured on the next issue of Park Bench (covering January - April 2010. This issue will be available on Sunday, Dec. 13 in the Aiken Standard. Additional copies may be picked up beginning Monday, Dec. 14 at H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, Smith-Hazel Recreation Center, Citizens Park II office and the Weeks Tennis Center. Contests will continue to rotate among the elementary schools.)
Thanks to Millbrook Elementary art teacher Denise Spacek for participating in this issue's cover art contest. For more information, contact Sheri Clemons at sclemons@cityofaikensc.gov.
