Aiken man arrested on murder charge

An Aiken man has been arrested in connection with a murder that occurred on Abbeville Avenue last week.
Freddie L. Simpkins, 20, was arrested without incident at his place of employment around 8 p.m. Wednesday. He is charged with the murder of Donald McCalla, who was gunned down Sept. 9 as was sitting in a pickup truck outside the empty home at 411 Abbeville Ave. Police say the shooting was drug related.
Simpkins is charged with murder, two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
He is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.
