Fueled by the uniqueness of the date, Aiken Public Safety is using Aug. 8, 2008 (08.08.08), to send a message to motorists that driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or greater is a crime.
"We aren't trying to hide this enforcement," Sgt. Jake Mahoney said. "We want people to know what we are up to."
In fact, Public Safety will post a message board in the city on Friday to remind motorists of the enforcement campaign.
"We are giving them fair warning," the sergeant added.
Eight officers, pulled from Public Safety's patrol division, community services division and special services division, will be joining the City's HEAT team to ramp up enforcement efforts.
The Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic team has been targeting drunken driving since they first formed earlier this year and are glad to have the help.
"Be on the lookout for checkpoints," Mahoney warned.
Motorists should have their driver's license, proof of insurance and registration handy.
Public Safety will also be looking for seat belt violations.
The mix is deadly, he said of alcohol and failure to buckle up.
"Plan ahead," he added.
Add taxi cab numbers into your cellular phone.
"We want people to watch out for their friends as well" he said. "Don't be afraid to intervene first to keep them off the roadway, because we will."
