Two dogs with unique backgrounds need forever homes and are up for adoption at the Aiken County Animal Shelter.
Shelter staff said it's not unusual to get an animal in occasionally who has a special story, but it's something else when an animal comes in under especially heart-rending circumstances. Such are the cases of Catfish and Duffy.
Catfish is a 2-year-old male Shar Pei mix. Things looked up for the pup when he was adopted out recently.
The woman who took him home also had horses, which Catfish apparently found too irresistible to leave alone.
"He started chasing the horses," said County shelter vet tech Sandy Larsen.
Unfortunately, Catfish was returned to the shelter soon after.
"But he gets along good with the other animals," Larsen said. "And cats." What drew the woman to adopt him, Larsen added, was Catfish's unique appearance.
While Larsen said she would never call a dog ugly, shelter staff bestowed the canine with the fish's name because the two do bear a striking resemblance.
Catfish is already micro-chipped and neutered, which means the fee to adopt him is only $38.
Duffy is a 13-year-old male Great Pyrenees and Malamute mix. After living 13 years in a loving home, Duffy's owner passed away and he was turned over to the shelter. Despite his age, Larsen said the dog is in good health.
His fur is long and extremely thick. It has become matted and is in serious need of grooming. Thankfully, there's help so Duffy can look his best for potential adopters.
"Molly's Militia (a North Augusta-based rescue organization) is going to groom him for us," Larsen said.
Duffy is also neutered so the fee to adopt him is only $38.
The Aiken County Animal Shelter is located at 411 Wire Road and is open Monday through Saturday. For more information, contact the shelter at 642-1537.
